Working for the Weekend

I remember the days when leaving the office on a Friday afternoon was akin to being set free from a prison. I'm free! I'd sing in my head as I minced along the corridors and out into the sunshine of a brave new weekend world.

Now that I don't have an office job, the days blur into one. Friday afternoon is pretty much the same as every other day -- and I love it! The weekends aren't a time when I desperately try to jam all my chores into two days, along with catching up on sleep and somehow trying to be creative. Now, I carry on with my MS or whatever projects I've got on the go, maybe stopping a little earlier than normal or hanging out with my husband when he's not working (he's slightly obsessive when it comes to his own creative endeavors).

So, do you 'work' on the weekends too? Or are they so crazy it's hard to get stuff done?

(PS - I'll be drawing for prizes in my Great 1-1-2 Mate Giveaway on Monday!)

  1. My work spills into the weekends unfortunatley. Someday I may be able to change that when I'm rich :) haha.

    Good luck with your work!

  2. I definitely write on the weekends, but I try not do any blogging stuff. Otherwise I'd lose the whole weekend!

  3. I've been self-employed for years and my schedule is often chaotic at best. So my days tend to blur as well. And I never do housework on the weekends!

  4. Yay! I'm like you. I never know which day it is. The whole week schedule blurs into one cozy little fur ball. But I do now, becasue I'm doing this A-Z Challenge.

  5. Oh yeah. Since I've been out of work, the days just blur together. The only way I can keep them straight is by physical therapy appointments!

It's a bit harder for me to do stuff on the weekends, only because my husband wants to play video games together and such. I've gotten so used to working on things every day, that it's hard to turn it off for the weekend.

  6. I do work on the weekends. Editing and writing are pretty much a 7-day a week job. Housework gets squeezed in during breaks from the computer.

  7. I try not to write at all during the weekends, so that I spend quality time with my family and frolic about.

But, I sometimes sneak away and pound on the laptop keys. I try not to, though.

I never write blog posts on the weekend, though.

    Happy Weekend!

    Love,
    Lola

  8. Ahhh... weekends. the dayjob keeps me looking forward to Friday yet I don't dread Mondays. I am blessed to have a dayjob that allows me to be a little more free than most from Monday to Friday so I don't HAVE to rush it all in on the weekends...

But oh how I love a Saturday afternoon... ;o)

  9. I love weekends since I get a lie in. But since I've been revising they just feel like an extension of my week. Still, I take breaks to see friends and do other stuff too. I'm a multi-tasker :)

  10. Ooh.. I love weekends. I'm all about sleeping and church on the weekends. And doing lots of family time!

  12. Oh, and YES I work all day everyday, with the 3yo. Never get a break, unless she's gone or asleep...

  13. When I had a 9-5 I felt the same way and now with my life at home sometimes I forget what day it is!

  14. I don't usually write Sat. or Sun. unless the voices in my head don't let me do anything until I get them down! I spend time with family and read read read on weekends. Hope you have a great weekend, Talli!

  15. Hi

Aww enjoy these days that blur together and hope they bring you many hours of serious WIP writing!

I work (literally - a second job!) on Sundays so really only have Saturdays to cram everything in!! Phew!

    Take care

  16. Haha, try living in California and working at home, then you don't know what month it is either...or what season lol! Oh, how I miss it!

  17. I'm a stay-at-home mom and I write in whatever free time I can find. That being said, Saturdays and Sundays tend to be family time. I will write on Saturday if the opportunity comes up, but Sunday is strictly off limits.

  18. Weekends for me are prime writing time. Most days after work, I just don't have the energy for massive writing spurts.

It's not always easy writing when everyone's home - but it's got to be done. Have a great weekend!

  19. I do work on the weekends, just not as much. And I'm more inclined to set the weekend writing aside to go hang out with the fam :)

  20. It's so interesting reading about everyone's work habits (yes, really!). I feel like I'm in such a bubble sometimes, so thanks for sharing!

  21. i pretty much don't go online the whole weekend. It's nice. I recommend it

  22. I've got a 40+ hour-a-week job, plus writing, plus everything else we have to do to be functioning individuals in society. Sometimes I work on the weekend, sometimes not. I always try to write on the weekend, because it gives me a little more time to focus on the task at hand. I'm envious that you don't have to work a punchcard job! But good for you, and great job keeping yourself motivated throughout the week! Have a great weekend. :)

  23. I don't work outside the home but I sure do work a lot inside of it.

  25. Everday is Monday to me, working or otherwise.

  26. Between job and family and all the other stuff, it seems like I work all the time. I've been on break this week and my kids say I look worse and more exhausted than ever. I must be doing something wrong.

  27. Tallie I hope to be walking in those shoes one day. I'm eyeing the clock now longing for release!

My family steals most of my weekend, but they're so cute how could get angry at them. Not me.

    Happy writing!

  28. Since Mr.A retired I can't tell the difference between weekdays and weekends. I keep having to remind him that I haven't retired. I'm still writing. We will get into a routine soon and I'm a firm believer that everyone needs at least one day a week when they don't do those tiresome jobs like food shopping and laundry. A week's got to have a shape to it.

  29. I left my office job (Librarian) nearly 3 years ago. While I miss it terribly, I still work plenty at home as a mama and writer. And yes, I work through each and every weekend with no plans of stopping. Well, maybe for some chocolate and snuggles with the kids...

  30. I love my weekends because the kids and my husband are home. We spend time together and I don't do as much writing or blogging - more reading though. Have a good one!

  31. Weekends are hectic around here. I have a husband and teenager gone all week and then poof! Home on the weekends. I love spending time with them, cleaning and stuff. I don't get much done on weekends, then again, I don't get much done during the week lately either.

    Come on Spring!!!!

  33. Weekends, oh weekends. I love them. They are reserved for my house work and work on fun stuff. Like my WIP. No real work allowed. :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I wish the weekends filtered more into the week. LoL. I don't "work" on the weekends, no. I don't blog. I spend time with my daughter and try to squeeze in writing time. Even that's a stretch though.

  35. Definitely work on the weekend. When you're in the groove why switch tracks? Besides, each day should strive for a balance?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Prison analogy = right on. I like to do all my errands during the week after work so I have the whole weekend to write and enjoy myself. If only the weekend was five days long and the work week was two.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I leave work on Friday with the hopes of getting chapters completed over the weekend (at least two), so I leave work for more work... but fun work.

  38. Even though my day job is only Monday through Friday (I work in a school system), weekends are usually still majorly busy for me. I catch up on everything that I didn't have time for during the week, like housework. But I do try to get writing time in, too, since I don't have to be at work. And though I count writing as work... sometimes it feels like play, too. Depending on the day.

  39. When I'm writing a first draft, I do the majority of my writing on the weekends. I get up early and stay up late as well. But if I'm editing, it's more evenly spread out across the whole week.

  40. I'm a stay-at-home mom & I really look forward to weekends because my husband & I can tag team taking care of the peanut. These are the only times that I can write as long as I need to. During the week, everything is in 15 minute increments.

    ReplyDelete
  41. It is nice, isn't it? I kind of like it maintaining a nice steady pace through the week.

Have a great weekend Talli! Hope it's full of words, quality time with the fam and fun!

  42. Weekends are when I catch up on all the work I haven't got done during the week. Work work, Uni course work and house work. Arrrrgggh. Best of all I catch up on spending time with my wonderful family.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't work, but my husband does, which is basically the same thing.- There's no such thing as a 'friday night' or 'saturday night'- They're all spent in just about the same way- me, my computer, and sushi take out.

    ReplyDelete
  44. You're right - when you work outside of the home, the weekends are golden, but I never have time get everything done, i.e., laundry, clean the house, grocery shopping, yard work, cooking, and, oh yes, writing.

I can't wait until I can stay home & write full time!

    ReplyDelete
  45. I work every third weekend. I don't mind it though because usually things are quieter at work. None of the pesky bigwigs around. ;-)

What I love is having weekdays off. It's when I get my 'me' time.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Because hubby and I both work from home, it's easy to get into the way of time and dates not meaning anything. If it wasn't for having a teenage son that still needs certain things done on certain days of the week, I'd never even know what day it was, much less care.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks everyone, for your commments! It's really nice to feel I'm not the only one working on the weekends - and losing track of time!

  48. Thank you, Talli, for coming into my site via Karen Gowen. As you know, I'm very new to blogging and it's going to take me some time to make connections, mostly with writers. I can relate to you younger (much younger than I am in most cases) writers because I've been there, with husband, with young children. Now I'm a widow and take care 24/7 of a disabled daughter (she's 44 but childlike and still looks very young), living off Social Security (both of us) and with plenty of time to write. Supposedly. It would seem that I could get a lot done, but there are distractions--caregiving, visiting children and grandchildren who are 100 miles away. Five typed pages doesn't sound like much to achieve in a day. But sometimes it is. The distractions, including our fears and insecurities kick in. And then you add blogging to the list! You have to do the necessary tasks of life, and then prioritize the rest of your time. Writing takes a lot of discipline, but if we really want to write, if we really want to write something you hope will be published, we'll make the time for the writing. I once thought wouldn't it be wonderful to just be able to stay home and write. But life turns out not to be that simple !!! Hang in there, everyone.

  49. My weekends are exactly like this too - if I want time off during the week, I take it, and then work when it's raining and everyone else is struggling to get round the supermarket on the saturday morning.

  50. Writing is every day of the week. But sometimes it's good to take Wednesdays off!
